Even the Best…
I got a most unexpected phone call yesterday afternoon (Sept 1) from
Skip Allan’s housemate that he had just been rescued at sea by a freighter
and had to pull the plug on his beloved "Wildflower" and leave
her behind. Skip had just won the Single Handed Transpac race to Hawaii
and was on his way home with a detour to the ‘garbage patch’ in the
Pacific High. Apparently he was only a couple of hundred miles off the
coast here and had been in very strong winds and huge breaking seas
for days. Not only was he getting beat up and exhausted but was having
a very hard time keeping water out of the interior as the boat was being
smashed constantly by breaking waves and the cockpit just couldn’t drain
quick enough to keep up with the volume of water he was taking on.
