US Ailing

I have certainly felt disappointed by the US’s results
in the Olympics in Qingdao. I don’t want to be negative about
where we went wrong, but would rather reinforce a direction which could
greatly improve the results. I, however, would not propose the Royal
Yachting Association squad type of solution mentioned in an earlier
SA article. The US needs to do just the opposite! We need to open it
up more by a factor of 10 or more. At the core of the problem is we
need to improve the general impression about sailing in the US. Sailing
is still thought of as an elite sport, too expensive and not very accessible
to most of the population. The RYA style would reinforce sailing as
an elitist sport. Besides, “The status blows”. We also need
to focus on a group that will put a spark in the sport. There is no
more an exciting group of humans on the planet than High School aged
kids, followed by College aged kids. This group would be my focus and
here a possible plan.
