J/Dazed

We expect a lot of stories out of this week’s J/22 World Championships in Rochester, NY although none of them will have the high speeds, easy courses, and great scenery of the Casade Locks – with 105 boats starting as one fleet, we expect just the opposite: High-pitched screaming from frustrated skippers of dog slow boats stuck in the dirty air of a hundred other dog slow boats, punctuated by more high-pitched screaming and the sound of crunching and splintering fiberglass at what will be one of the messiest first weather marks in history.

The bitching and moaning started even before the event when Chris Larson called regatta organizers at 10 PM the night that registration was ending. He wanted to sign up, but only if he could do it the next day. Regatta staff dude said, “Well, the rules say have it in by midnight or you’re out.” Opie answers, “BUT I’M CHRIS LARSON!” He may be Chris Larson, but he’s just a spectator for this one.
