There are some pretty bizarre regattas out there if you look hard enough, but one of the strangest and most fun is the Rockville Regatta, not far from Charleston, SC. It’s run in the marshes just off the Intracoastal Waterway, where strong sea breeze funnels through Bohicket Creek, a channel that can run at up to five knots.
There are maybe 70 boats at Rockville – E-Scows, Lasers, Sunfish, Y-Flyers, and nearly a dozen Sea Island One-Designs – a boat that was created specifically for this regatta just after the second World War. There are ten of these spinnakerless scows, each painted a different happy color, and the guys and gals who sail them are legendary.
