Round Up, Not So Extreme

Round Up

Not So Extreme
Sunday
was another wet and wild day of Extreme 40 racing, in Cowes. The day
1 style carnage – with three capsizes and one serious collision
– was absent, but there was first race drama, when Volvo Ocean Race
smacked into the back Oman Sailing, ending that team’s racing
for the day and earning a disqualification. The Omani boat ended up
with a broken tiller and damaged back beam, but it could have been worse;
crew member Mark Bulkeley rolled onto the trampoline just in time for
VOR’s bowsprit to miss his head by inches.

A second race near capsize for Holmatro was averted by some very skilled
boat handling by cat specialist Andreas Hagara. His skills also ensured
that Holmatro kept it’s second place, from yesterday, but X40
King of Cowes is Ed Baird, on Alinghi.
