big thanks to Mr. Pelicano for keeping us up to date with the latest
in West Coast Mini action.

After a delay of several days waiting for a better weather window, the
2008 West Coast Race for Mini 6.5 boats got underway at 1:00 p.m July
11. PST. Only two of the four boats entered in the Victoria, BC to San
Francisco, CA leg of the race made it to the start line, with the other
two retiring due to time / logistical constraints.

Conditions at the start were perfect, with a solid 25 knot breeze from
the west, gusting to 30 knots, and a strong ebb current to help the
boats make their way quickly through the difficult Race Rocks part of
the course. The combination of wind against current should make for
a fast but bumpy upwind ride out to the Pacific Ocean, but once they
round the corner and head south competitors should find perfect downwind
sailing conditions all the way to San Francisco.

Veteran Mini racer Andy Able is at the helm of the brand new Zero series
boat "Antidote" (CAN 726) with owner Adrian Blunt in the co-pilot’s
seat. Andy is one of the few Americans who have made the trip to Europe
to compete on the tough Mini circuit, completing the Mini Solo, the
Mini Pavois, and the Mini Fastnet (with Craig Horsfield), among other
