From time to time in my travels, I meet an SA hater. It happens less now than it did a few years ago when Mr. Clean first appeared, but still – there are plenty of people who think that our attitude and our honesty have no place in “their” sport. Never mind the fact that our community encompasses a huge percentage of the active racers around the globe, or that SA is, by far, the best resource for all things sailing – these asshats cling to the fanciful idea that we’re “a bunch of hacks that get off on putting others down,” to quote one bitter old fart I met in Annapolis. While there are plenty of Anarchists that fit that description, there are legions more SA members that are helpful, friendly, and incredibly accomplished – and they don’t hesitate to share their experiences with their friends on SA.
The past few weeks have hammered that point home for me. Our community is kicking ass and taking names all over the racing world, and they let SA tell the world about it on this page – or they share it themselves in the forum. Avid SA readers and posters are now Etchells and Melges 24 World Champions, while others just won the Bermuda Race and Onion Patch. Still more are taking off on Transatlantic record attempts, or setting up boats for other record attempts. Anarchists are blitzing handicap regattas and building big one-design fleets, and designing and building innovative boats for everyone from family cruisers to the ultimate in high-performance foilers. We are legion, and today’s page is dedicated to the Anarchists that are ripping it up all over the planet. Keep it up.
