Lord of the Lake

Our third story is about another dominant performance from a friend of SA – Matt Scharl. Matt’s no superstar, but he’s won the past two Chicago-Mackinac races in the Multihull division aboard his F-25 Gamera as well as getting a houseful of victories in nearly every other distance race in the Midwest (beating yours truly by less than six minutes last year). Matt is F25 Gameramasterful at keeping his boat moving at her best possible speed, and last week he proved it with an exclamation point during the Solo Chi-Mack race, beating the experienced Ron White in his bigger, faster F-31 over the line by more than seven hours…and Ron owed Matt nearly four hours on handicap. Matt moves on this coming weekend to a practice race up the lake aboard the former America’s Cup catamaran Stars & Stripes, where he’ll be helping the psychotic cat crew get up to speed in advance of the Chicago-Mack race, when S&S will try to break the record set by Steve Fossett in the same boat a few years back. Scharl won’t sail on the cat – he’s going for the hat trick in Gamera. If you’d like some weather or multihull coaching for your Great Lakes racing, send a PM to “Gamera.” Here’s Matt’s report from the Solo Mack:
