John Tomko and Ian Billings take a shot to the face during the Great Texas 300.
The GT300 is the direct descendent of the legendary Worrell 1000 and Tybee 500 races, though a few hundred miles to the west, tun between South Padre Island and Galveston Beach. . This one saw the same vicious boat-breaking waves on its last stage that contributed to the loss of Cynthia Woods, with breeze in abundance. Tomko/Billings averaged over 16.3 knots straight-line on their Nacra F-18 Infusion through steep seas. The race has grown to 12 teams this year, though only five completed the entire brutal race.
