To keep a yacht upright traditionally
we add large lumps of lead to the bottom of the keel, then on race boats
we place crew on the rail. This has been taken a step further with movable
ballast in the form of water ballast and canting keels. The latter are
considered the present state of the art but have their own limitations
not least many instances of failure.
