second annual US Kiteboarding Nationals took place at Crissy Field in
San Francisco. The riders came from the Bay Area, as well as Texas, Florida,
Hawaii. Several kiters came from Brazil, Mexico, Germany, and Switzerland.
The first day was not as windy as usual, yet the riders could enjoy the
view of the Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Last year, the weather didn’t
permit them to enjoy the sights!!! The weather changed as the Nationals
continued and "a typical day on the Bay" was observed. The wind
picked up just in time for the races, thus riders had less problems with
their kites and less collisions. Even though mother-nature has helped
us, we, on the race committee were still "out there" looking
out for the kiters.
the top three winners were: Damien LeRoy (1st place), Sean Farley (2nd
place), and Sky Solbach (3rd place). Another interesting fact is that
this year, the ‘out-of-towners" dominated the races and were able
to win this year’s National Championship.
The winner, Damien LeRoy said: "I can say that this is the biggest
win of my career." Photo by Steve Gunn
