may remember that your Ed went to Finland a few days ago, primarily to
see the brand new FG 43 and tour the Finngulf factory,
builders of the boat. First, the boat is quite nice, and it would be hard
for it not to be, given the Farr design and the effort that the builder
is putting into the boat.tIt represents a bit of a new direction for FG,
with a modern design pedigree and new build techniques like infusion technology.
Sailing hull #1, it is an impressive R/C – big, roomy and seemingly goes
right along when we sailed it (thought to be about Farr 40 in speed).
This boat should have a lot of appeal to the market segment looking for
just that. In many ways, it looks like a big Beneteau 40.7, but is clearly
much more boat than that, especially in build quality. Interestingly,
hull #2 Vivien (complete
with bow thruster!) just
won the IRC class of the Volvo Suursaari Race Sunday (the biggest offshore
race in Finland). Six are already sold but the sinking dollar isn’t going
to do the boat any sales favors over here. Gotta say I liked the boat
quite a bit, and FG can make them on a semi-custom basis pretty much any
way you want, although if you do get one – have them make sexier windows
– the current ones are boring!
