The Crash

The Crash

Speaking
of disastrous TP52 regatta’s, remember the big TP 52 crash at the Med
Cup last week? Nothing like a little first hand report to see how it really
went down.

I
can help you out a bit with this one as I was doing tactics on C&G
at the time and represented the team in the room.. We were approaching
the windward mark in about 4th if we could get across the starboard boats.
There was no way, no hole, nothing. So, I decided to duck everyone and
pass boats later in the race – 40 mile costal race and we were only 1.8
miles into it…

Anyway,
we bore off and started ducking. The boat’s data showed us reaching at
a 95 TWA going "against the grain" if you will…. Mutua was
a boat length in front and tacked into the only whole, which was VERY
small. We were reaching for about 14 seconds when we had a close duck
behind Quantum. After Quantum was Mutua with Audi overlapped to windward,
Bribon directly behind and USA 17 behind them. Basically there was a wall
of starboard boats coming at us at 9 knots. At this point we were going
around 12 knots in 25 knots of breeze and there was no where to go except
behind the whole wall. This was very clear to our boat, no big deal as
the vang was off, main was out and everyone knew what we were doing….
