Bourgnon and his team on the big trimaran Team Ocean went looking for
an easy record in Dubai and instead ended up snapping the tri’s center
hull in half: “We
were going full speed and suddenly the boat broke,” said Christof
Vanek, a member of the crew. “It’s very unfortunate.”
There
was a loud bang, the bow rose up and it was immediately apparent that
the carbon-fibre boat’s central hull had snapped almost clean in
two.

The alarm was raised at Duboats, located in Dubai International Marina
Club, which was serving as Team Ocean’s headquarters and whose owner,
Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed
, was on board the trimaran as she broke
up. The
team were “devastated”, said Vanek, adding that it was just
one of those things. “There was no wrong manoeuvre, we were on a
pure straight line, flatwater run, not punching through any waves.”
The boat was, he said, “very heavily damaged – and after sailing
