Not A Happy Landing

This
J/80 got TKO’d at the Sprit Fest on Long Island last weekend. Witnesses
say they ‘saw the boat broach repeatedly at the finish line and was over
for a long time when they reported seeing cracks form around the keel.
The keel
failed
, leading to the broaching back on the old windward side. They
couldn’t get the sails down and people were in the 50-ish degree water.
Windspeeds were easily 20-30 knots. They tried towing her after the keel
failed but after taking all the sailors in and picking them out of the
water, the boat was already sinking. Divers were brought in to surface
the boat, and it was found on this beach. As you can see, the mast is
lost, as is the keel and the rudder.

Also,
it appears the spinnaker torqued the pole straight from the hull, causing
significant damage. There was also damage to the deck hardware from towing
the boat before it sank. Breakwater Yacht Club did an excellent job of
getting everyone out of the cold water. The skipper was reported to have
almost gone into hypothermic shock, and would have had it not been for
the excellent response of the safety boats. – Kinky Reggae. Photos by
