We love stories of persistence, and Steve White gives us some of that from the Artemis Transat. Yes, he came in last place, but considering his 10-year old fixed keel “Spirit of Weymouth” finished just half a day behind Dee Cafari’s state-of-the-art Aviva was pretty good going.
Steve has no major sponsor and he and his wife have sunk all they have into his quest to be on the Vendee Globe start line. They’ve remortgaged their house several times and they manage to survive by using their Open 60 as a corporate hospitality yacht. Gotta love the underdog.
Giovanni Soldini and his Class 40 Telecom Italia made it a treble today. First in the Transat Jacques Vabre, first in the Grand Prix Petite Navire and now first in the Artemis – he’s another in a tiny group of truly legendary solo ocean racers. Behind him, Boris Herrmann and Beluga Racer look set for second place, but for the chasing pack the weather could bring a race re-start.
