A Premiere Screw Up

A Premiere Screw Up

Most
sailors were stunned when Peter Craig’s Premiere Racing announced that
they would be running a race directly competing with the historical and
beloved Pineapple Cup, an exciting downwind flyer of a race that starts
in Ft. Lauderdale and ends in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Along with the Storm
Trysail Club, Craig landed a fat sponsorship deal with the Casa de Campo
resort – a posh golf-course retreat in the Dominican Republic – and sent
out a press release extolling the virtues of their upwind slog to a glamorous
destination in a decidedly unglamorous nation.

Unfortunately
for Premiere and STC, the press release was the first time a lot of important
people – including some of the STC officers who’ve been organizing the
Pineapple Cup for years – heard of the decision, and they were understandably
pissed off. At least one respected STC officer was said to have resigned
his post over the issue, and the conflict led to the resurgence of the
a name long since missing from the great races of the US Southeast coast
– the Southern Ocean
Racing Conference
, which is now the organizer of the MoBay Race.
