Zero To Hero
Here’s
one you don’t see everyday – the 150 foot pilot schooner "Spirit
of South Carolina" helps open the ocean racing season in Charleston,
SC racing against the PHRF fleet with a rating in the 200’s. In 2 knots
of breeze at the start they struggled, but a gale blowing in a couple
hours later saw the big gaffer leap ahead, passing boats left and right
until a halyard broke, forcing their retirement. No real damage to the
boat, while the race was won by Bill Hanckel’s J/120 "Emocean,"
