Testing, Testing

When
the editors at MadMariner.com decided to review navigation software, we had some strong ideas about
how to do it. We wanted honest product tests that focused on one piece
of software at a time, not the usual impotent, examine-everything-at-once
approach we have all read before.

The
result is Hard
Facts on Software
, an 18-part series that looks to be a very complete
work on navigation software and electronic charting. Written by Mark and
Diana Doyle, authors of the Managing the Waterway cruising guides, the
series takes a hard look at software by Maptech, Nobeltec, Rose Point,
Raymarine, DigiBOAT, TIKI and just about everything else on the market
for both Mac and PC. It includes primers on how to get started, how to
buy an onboard computer and how to download free NOAA charts.

The
series conclusion, including recommendations and lessons learned, will
be published Feb. 14 (yeah, Valentines Day). Sign up for an E-mail
