Weekend Round Up

Breaking News
Breakages and more breakage have been the story of the last few days.
In the Barcelona World Race, PRB broke its mast, Tenemos and Estrella
Damm suffered rudder damage. In the Transat Ecover BtoB, Safran developed
keel problems, Mike Golding on Ecover was forced to retire with engine
and other problems, Maisonneuve almost dismasted when a stay broke and
Generali, Gitana 80, Aviva and all have sail problems.

ARC also had its casualties, but human, rather than boat. A crew member
onboard the yacht Avocet received a serious head injury from the boom
during a broach. A successful evacuation to the cruise ship Costa Mediterranea
took place and the casualty is now en route for Barbados. Several other
ARC boats were involved in a MayDay rescue, when a 31ft catamaran called
Spam – not participating in the ARC – was dismasted and holed. ARC yachts
Blue Spirit, Navillus, Worldwide Traveller, Cat-man-do and Regina all
responded. Navillus, a Bavaria 50, was first on scene and Spam’s crew
members were transferred by liferaft. All the stories are on SA
