Sailor Chick of the Week

Lakewood Yacht Club sailboat racer Katelynn Newberry won 1st place in the International 20 class at the 33rd Annual Ruff Riders Distance Catamaran Race at South Padre Island over Labor Day Weekend.  Approximately 40 catamarans, including nine I-20’s, competed in this year’s race.  Newberry also placed 4th overall in the spinnaker catamaran class.

Newberry, who started to race when she was seven and is now an 8th grader at Seabrook Intermediate school, started sailing before she could walk with her father Roy Newberry, Jr. and grandfather, Roy Newberry, Sr.   She has been in the Lakewood Yacht Club Seahorse sailing program since the first grade.      The Ruff Riders race is a two-day event that is sailed mostly offshore.  The course of the first race is out of the Port Isibell jetties into the Gulf of Mexico, north to Port Mansfield Jetties and back down the beach, a total of 55 miles.
