Another Record?
At
1000hrs Friday October 19 Kiwi time, 226 boats will leave Auckland on
course for Russell in the Bay of Islands. All of the HSBC Coastal Classic’s
records except one (set by Zana Konica Minolta in 2005) have been in
place since 1996, and wouldn’t you know it, the forecast is for
a good 20-30 knots from the SSE, almost identical to that great day
in 1996, and optimal for a new set of records. Race favorites are Taeping
– the Queensland cat imported to New Zealand earlier this year,
last year’s winner X-Factor, and a couple of smaller multihulls
including the 30’ tri Line 7 Marine – formerly known as Frantic
Drift, which has only seen the light of day a few times having spent
nearly a decade sitting in a container, but is bloody fast and is sailed
by an all-star crew. All the action – including GPS tracking of
the top boats – will be right
