Coast to Coast

Like dopes, we didn’t get to this fine report from Lyn
Hines
on the TP 52’s Coastal Race from last week’s Portugal
Trophy
. Impressively, Mean Machine won the series.

After
a onshore postponement until at least 2:00, the "coastal race"
started in an 8 knot breeze. The point value was split into two races
as by way of a scoring gate, which in Alicante provided some confusion
when Artemis missed a mark and was penalized for both races at first.

No confusion today as Mean Machine repeated their hallmark "late
start" and immediate tack to the favored right side for a 25 mile
course mainly made up of a series of, more or less, windward leeward,
a reaching mark and harbor finish.
Mean Machine being the first to be able to tack away went into full on
speed mode while the rest of the fleet fought for clean air. After 15
minutes sailing, Mean machine tacked over to the middle to meet up with
Artemis who led around the first windward mark. The Russian Team Valars
must have been excited rounding third which it unusual for them with their
new team and old boat. Jibe sets ensued for the first half of the fleet
to get to the beach and the second half continued on in patchy breeze.
