Fastnet
Light to Racers: “F You!”

After
a 25-hour postponement to let a nasty weather system get closer to
the fleet, the Rolex
Fastnet Race started Monday in clear skies, with good breeze. The RORC’s
seemingly bizarre decision lets the possible storm hit the small
boats while they are relatively sheltered from open water. The worst
damage during the infamous ’79 race came from the massive waves
created when a secondary low passed near the fleet, merging wave
trains from different directions. It looks like the Fastnet Rock may
have something special in store for competitors during this year’s
edition – maybe whoever created the logo above knew it beforehand?
The four ORMA trimarans entered in the race pulled out before the
start – will there be a horror show, or just a nice breeze?
