Day
1 of the Contender Worlds
The
2007 Contender Worlds in Medemblik are underway. Roger Martin, one of
the four Canadians who traveled to Medemblik to compete, sent this report.
Yesterday,
the first day of racing, started very early for Neil, Gerry and me.
We’d all arrived at Medemblik three days early to assemble our new boats
and practice sailing them. But the builder, Joachim Harprect, had been
overwhelmed with boats to build for the regatta and other demands on
his time, such that, after several delays, the boats finally arrived
at 2 am the first day of racing. I woke up at 0520 not knowing whether
the boats had finally arrived or not. I bicycled down to the boat park
at 0530 for a look and finally saw our three boats, two stacked on a
trailer and the third on the roof of Joachim’s car. I set to unpacking.
