The first blustery, chilly weekend of the season is upon many of us, and what better time to remind you just how much fun frostbiting is?  Never tried it?  Got kids?  Call your area clubs and find out how to get on the water, all winter long.  Huge thanks to Director/Producer/Writer/Videographer Thurston Smith, and to the early adopters who helped him pay for this great little documentary.

The Northern Hemisphere has at last escaped the clutches of a winter that never really materialized, but lovers of cold weather sailing can now rejoice – at long last, they’ve got their own documentary.

We’re not recommending your $11.00 purchase of Frostbiters; the quality and aspect ratio of the teaser above make us a bit nervous and 11 bucks for 34 minutes is a bit cheeky.  But it costs less than a pair of woolen mittens and about the same as a nice windshield scraper, and serious frostbiters might as well support a guy who took the time to make a movie about your favorite insane sailing discipline.

More about the movie here.

Unbroken

The USCG icebeaker Mackinaw shows off what she does when she’s not acting as an RC boat on the Chicago Mackinac Race; chopping up ice for hours as it fills in behind her. Shot this morning behind our Senior Editor’s pad on the North Channel of the St. Clair River near Detroit, and like seemingly everything in life, not without controversy.

We send our most hopeful thoughts a few hundred miles to the East, for a tragedy-free 48 hours to the hundreds of thousands of Anarchists effected by what may be the biggest blizzard ever to hit Boston and New York. To all our friends in the flood zone around sailing-heavy spots like Newport and the Sound: Good luck.

The same godawful arctic hell that led to the second-coldest winter in recorded history and the longest iced-over period ever for the Great Lakes is back, and with an icy skin making its debut on Lake Superior a full ten days earlier than last year, we could be seeing a historic winter for much of the Midwest.  Stay warm, and check this piece from ABC News for some infographics on the solidifying situation.
