“The best Volvo Ocean Race stopover I’ve ever been to,” said one 10 year VOR veteran.
“Way, way better than anything AC34 did in San Fran,” said a former ACEA staffer.
“The best crowd I’ve seen at an American sailing event since the 12 meter days in Newport, and maybe even bigger than those days,” said one lifelong pro racer and Newport denizen.
SA’s final report on the regatta that returned America’s credibility to top-end racing is waiting for the final numbers from Sail Newport and VOR, but the above quotes sum it all up, and the summary is simple: Newport, Rhodey, the Northeast, and America got together and finally showed up for a sailboat race, and no one who was there will ever forget it.
We’ll have much more for you soon, but if you were there, pat yourself on the back. You are the reason the VOR will be back, and you may have helped secure American funding for a real US team in the next one.
Our final video from the Sailing Anarchy/Sperry World Tour is more about the sailing lifestyle and the future of the sport than it is about any racing that happened in Newport. Those things are far more important, and we hope you enjoy this film from Petey Crawford/Penalty Box Productions. Thanks to Sperry for supporting our coverage; if you like it and you want to see more, tell ‘em on Facebook.

Petey and the Charleston media team of Sander, Brian, and Dan the combat videographer put a rich and interesting 10-minute film together from 2015 Sperry Charleston Race Week. Like all CRW videos, it’s got girls, sportboats, and booze, and plenty more from another interesting cast of characters at the hemisphere’s biggest regatta. We’ll have a post-mortem on the event early next week – where it’s been, where it’s going, and why it works – as well as a full index to every bit of the coverage the Sperry supported SA team put together for you last month. Enjoy.

It’s got more entries than any keelboat regatta in the Western Hemisphere, more women and juniors than any open regatta we’ve ever been to, and one of the best venues in the entire sport. And now it’s got one of the best highlight videos, too. Petey Crawford from Penalty Box Productions went two days without sleep to get dozens of hours of footage from 2014 Sperry Top-Sider Charleston Race Week turned into 10 minutes of reality show/highlight reel/tribute film, and the result is just goddamned excellent. If you want to know the recipe for success in modern American regattas, watch and learn. And go here to find all the interviews, photos, and race coverage from the SA crew over this past weekend.

The Melges 32 2014 sailing season has arrived, and the class seems to have begun its rebound from the record low turnout this winter and a cancelled Gold Cup last fall. Video stud and reigning world champ mastman Petey Crawford checks in:
With head ARGOnaut Jason Carroll taking the reigns as Class President it’s a strong bet that the fleet will again find the golden fleece. Miami is host to the spring event in a few short weeks time as well as hosting the Gold Cup and the World Championship later in the year, and 3 more Melges 32 sanctioned regattas take place this summer in Newport including the US National Championship. With new blood in the fleet and some familiar faces from years past, it appears that the 32 class isn’t ready to lay down just yet. Still feeling the effects of my car vs. bike episode in Key West earlier this year, I sat out the Miami Winter regatta and produced the first of what will be a series of videos targeted to keep stoking the flames. Stay tuned.

As if there was any doubt about how bad ass The Reverend Petey Crawford’s videos are, take a look at this highlight reel from his 2013-14 jobs. And just as an added bonus, we’ve got a little contest for you. For the first 3 people who can tell us how many current World Champions appear in the video, Penalty Box Productions will provide their sweet new flat brim PBP hats and stylin’ shirts (thanks to Line Honors) for ya. There will even be a special, as-yet unnamed prize to the first person who can get every name of every world champion right!
So get going and tell us - Whaddaya got?

86 keel-less boats screaming downwind under grunty masthead kites sounds pretty good to us; it also looks good thanks to Petey Crawford’s Penalty Box Production of the E-boat Nationals last weekend in Lake Geneva. Tammy Sawyer shot a great gallery here, and Peter Hurling has a massive gallery from the regatta here. Screw sportboats; this is Scow Country.

With the C-Class stuff, some great scow films this year, and the upcoming E-Scow Nationals, Penalty Box Productions’ Petey Crawford is on a roll lately, and this 5-minute ‘story of the M20 Nationals’ is kickass from beginning to end. It gets you charged up, laughing, and makes you feel as though you were there; something precious few of the dozens of sailing reels we review weekly do. Check it out, and congrats again to the Audi Melges 20 Masters (and overall US) Champion John Kilroy! And if you think your club members’ kid with the nice HD camcorder and a pirated version of Final Cut is going to do your next national-level event proud, think again…and then give Petey a shout.
