Denuncia Habana - 1 (1)Billionaire Russians don’t have the greatest reputation for honesty or general goodness, but we are still horrified with just how few fucks they give about – well, just about anything (except the Orange Menace whore-in-chief – ed).

Case in point?  The builder and timber supplier of banking and chemical oligarch Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko‘s hideous Sailing Yacht A are now under investigation by German criminal prosecutor Axel Bieler for using illegally sourced Burmese teak for the deck of the giant Dustbuster.  Bieler said analysis of teak used in the construction showed that the teak had not come from a legal plantation.  Instead, it allegedly came from rapidly disappearing forests in Myanmar (Burma) – where exporting teak is completely banned.

There’s an even bigger reason than conservation and illegality to stay away from Burmese teak – proceeds from sales typically go straight to allegedly corrupt officials of Myanmar’s newly elected government.  That new government was a ray of hope for a population that had grown used to death squads, slave labor and worse, but it appears it’s ‘business as usual’ a year after the new government’s establishment.

But hey – Igorevich wants teak, so Igorevich gets teak –  and he just don’t give a fuck.

Screen Shot 2014-08-07 at 11.46.02 AMWhile many of the world’s economies continue to stagger in various states of recession and stagnation, the rich just keep on getting richer.  And how do we know?  Because it sure didn’t take long for the super/mega/giga-yacht market to rebound from the lows it’s been suffering since ’09. More from the Daily Times:

There were 221 sales of superyachts in the first half of 2014, a rise of almost a third from the same period a year ago, according to figures from Boat International Media. That represents a 66 per cent rise from the 74 yachts sold in the first half of 2009, the bottom of the market.

Separate figures show the new-build superyacht market is also picking up. According to Superyacht Intelligence, there are 360 yachts being built this year, a number which is expected to rise to 411 – the same level as in 2013. That is still well below the 2008 peak, when there was an order book of 587 yachts.

And that’s not even all the good news.  While the re-emergence of wealthy American buyers, who have traditionally been the biggest nationality of buyers, has helped boost the market, the founder of a luxury yacht builder says that European buyers have yet to return to the market, and that many Russian buyers have disappeared while the Ukraine crisis persists.  And that the Chinese market remains barely tapped thanks to a lack of infrastructure for yachting in China.

In other words, if you’re looking for your next Megayacht over the next few years, you’d better order it soon!

The battle for ‘Yachtsman With Smallest Dick’ continues to rage, and this year, Saudi Arabia’s Al-Waleed bin Talal finally gets to beat up on poor Roman Abramovich with the launch of Azzam.  Obviously this ain’t the same Azzam that Ian Walker nursed around the world in the last Volvo – nope, at 590 feet,  this one is bigger than 100 Volvo boats, and takes over the title once held by Larry Ellison’s Rising Sun as ‘bigggest private yacht in the world’. Umm…wow?

What is impressive – or impressively obscene, anyway – is the price; over $600 million, the speed; over 31 knots, the draft – just 14 feet, and a Lurssen build that took just 3 years – a record for a boat of this size.

And how incredibly unimpressive it is to spend so much money on so much opulence entirely because you must have the biggest boat.  Allow us to suggest something that might help our Saudi friend get some perspective.
