screen-shot-2017-01-02-at-1-11-41-pmWe suspect this little nugget is simply yet another example of the mess that is the Vendee Globe’s official English coverage, but maybe – just maybe – there’s more to the lower/thirds title slip up caught by an observant Anarchist watching the 28 Dec “Vendee Live” show on Facebook.

Look carefully under Alex Thomson team member “Neal McDonald” and you’ll note it says “Alex Thomson Racing Volvo Race Skipper”, and we’re not quite sure why.  Did the VG producer simply forget to put Mac’s ‘title’ on another line, or did someone sending over title graphics make a freudian slip because they know too much?  Could it be possible that Alex – and Hugo Boss’s – next big challenge will be a crewed one?  VOR boss Mark Turner and Thomson go way back and there’s precious little going on in IMOCA world for quite some time…and of course, much stranger things have happened.  What do you think?

UPDATE: After unsuccessfully attempting a repair for several hours at sea, Alex Thomson and Guillermo Altadill onboard HUGO BOSS have made the difficult decision to proceed to Vigo. This partial repair will not allow the duo to cross the Atlantic serenely. The technical team is currently en route to Vigo, Spain, to join the crew and try to consolidate repairs.More information tomorrow.

With two of the newest VPLP/Verdier foiling 60s already out of the TJV, it comes as no surprise that a third is now on the ropes.  With just a few days of sailing under her keel before the start of the race, Alex Thomson’s Hugo Boss is the newest of all of ’em all, according to Facebook, Alex and Guillermo Altadill will spend the next few hours hove to in the North Atlantic as they dig into unspecified technical issues and try to save their race.  On one hand, the attrition rate of the new boats is a big failure for the teams; on the other hand, reliability is never great at the extreme edges of any development box…especially on the first real outing as they build up to the big dance next year.

Our Senior Editor sat down with Thomson just before the Boss left for France earlier this month to chat about everything Open 60, with questions mostly provided by you Anarchists.  It’s another great chat between Clean and AT, and there’s plenty to listen to as you wait to see if they get back in the race.  You can download the full video from Vimeo here to play later. Track the TJV fleet here.

Alex Thomson AMA with Sailing AnarchyWith his his excellent mast walk video rapidly approaching a million Youtube views, long time Sailing Anarchy fan Alex Thomson wants to answer all of of our reader’s questions, and there’s always plenty to ask the charismatic British offshore racer.  He’s agreed to do an exclusive AMA (Ask Me Anything) with us on Friday, with questions coming via the SA Forum, Facebook, and Twitter, so here’s your chance to get all the info on the mechanics of the mast walk,  the value of PR Stunts, how to keep a sponsor happy, what it’s like being the top Brit in a Frenchman’s game, what his plans are for the various IMOCA/Ocean Master events this year, what’s the goss on the UK’s chance at an America’s Cup, and anything else you like. We’ll add up all the questions and get AT to hit them one by one in a Skype chat with Mr. Clean that we’ll have up and running by the end of the weekend.

Post questions right here in the forum, or send them in to our Twitter page or on Facebook with the hashtag #mastwalk before Friday at 0900 GMT/0500 EDT.  And while you’re at it, we highly recommend you have a look at the Aussie Sailing Team’s video piss-take of AT’s mast walk posted a few days back.  Hilarious stuff, and a good example of why Sailing Anarchy gets along so well with Australia.
