challenge france?

No, we’re not talking about the corinthian C-Class program run by Benjamin Muyl. We’re talking about the next America’s Cup. Here’s our take on the most likely candidates for the next Challenger of Record.

1: FRANCK CAMMAS.  The diminutive superstar isn’t in the Little AC for his health, and if anyone in the world could bring the America’s Cup back to France it’s Franck.   More importantly, he’s one of the few folks in the industry who still has a strong relationship with Oracle.  If not for a singlehanded capsize, Franck would most likely have driven the BOR 90 in Valencia.  Groupama was set to depart sailing, but the AC would be an entirely different kettle of fish for the massive French real estate company – especially an AC in multihulls.

2: ERNESTO BERTARELLI.  Laugh if you want, but with the “poisoned chalice” out of his possession, Ernesto has gone back to the fun-loving multihull sailor he always was.  He’s got the cash, he’s got the infrastructure, and if he can swallow his pride enough to wade back into the poop with Coutts, SNG would probably do it.  ”Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer” – you heard it here first.

3. ARTEMIS RACING.  Inside sources tell us Torborn and the KSSS aren’t particularly interested in dealing with the craziness of being CofR; apparently having a team of lawyers and Tom Ehman across the table isn’t the world’s most pleasant experience.  If no one else stepped up than of course Perce and the boys Minus Pope Paul, of course) might have been spurred to take action, but if so, it wasn’t their first choice.

4. BAR RACING.  Ben’s stock is at an all-time high, and he’s well poised to become the next Russell Coutts.  It’s for exactly that reason that we don’t think Larry will let him go, and if anyone can make SIr Ben an ‘offer he can’t refuse,’ it’s Lazza.

There you have it folks; we expect an announcement today.
