big jim

During last week’s J/111 North American Champs, Chicago sailmaking legend and tactician Jim Considine and his boys on the Wooton had a case of the slows. Jim asked his boys on the Wooton if they were sure the prop was closed.  No one answered.  He then asked if one of the crew would jump in the crystal-clear Lake Michigan water to check it out.  No one answered.

So at 76 years old, Considine stripped down to his skivvies and without a moment’s hesitation, over he went.  A minute later he was back aboard, showing off mad near-octagenarian levels of fitness as well as the real reason they call him ‘big Jim.’ After a horrible beginning to the regatta, Wooton went on a rampage, storming from near last to fifth.  W00t!
